Dont say that mark. Its still raining ashes here at my mom's house. It have done that for liek 4 hours...
Re: Vulcanic ash crippling European Air Traffic.
the lava created in a vulcano of divergent tectonic plates should be fluid and should not create any kind of ash, or even piroclasts.
I find this fenomenon quite strange

well a 'phew' might have been a bit of an understatement, usually it ranges somewhere between 50-100 km from the vulcano, however as quicksilver stated this one was 10-20x as strong.
@ pn: that is the case in the lava flowing up from simply tectonic movement in opposit direction (which is usualy the case in Iceland), however, this eruption was highly presurised, meaning that the lava had been trying to go up for quite some time, therefore going up, solidifying partially on their flow back down because it couldn't get out, creating ashes. Looking at the reports this had been brewing for some time, probably because of the cold temperatures on iceland speeding up the solidifying process, which causes the creation of a big load of ashes, which once again is shown in the report Quicksilver made. I don't actually know how and why this happends though.

Re: Vulcanic ash crippling European Air Traffic.
the bad thing about vulcanic ash is not only that you are hardly able to see in that, but this can also damage engines(motors in dutch) meaning that they will stop working, so the planes can just crash, which is a bad thing of course.

Re: Vulcanic ash crippling European Air Traffic.
Time for another update! The following link shows another forecast, the image in the lower right corner shows the forecast at 12:00Z on the 16th. The whole of Holland is still covered, aswell as Northern France now. I'm assuming 'my' airport will be closed aswell, or atleast very very limited.

A little background on this vulcano:
This is like nothing I've seen or heard of before. The complete Northern part of Europe has been shut down when it comes to air traffic. I find it very surreal but at the same time fascinating. Even 9/11 didn't even have such a big impact on aviation as vulcano currently has. I'm very curious how this will affect my work this weekend and how long this will continue! But judging from the link I posted in this thread and what I've read so far, it's going to be pretty bad (not to mention much this is costing airlines/airports).
Oh and guys, let's keep this on-topic please, thanks

A little background on this vulcano:
Over the past 1,100 years, Eyjafjallajökull has erupted four times: in 920, 1612, between 1821–1823, and in 2010. Each of the first three of these incidents directly preceded a major eruption in the nearby subglacial volcano, Katla. There is so far no evidence that Katla will erupt because of its vicinity to the current eruption in Eyjafjallajökull. Katla, which is a much more active volcano, known for its powerful subglacial eruptions and its large magma chamber, much larger than that of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano system, has still not shown any unusual activity, like expansion of the crust or seismic activity.
However, one cannot rule out that possibility, since history has shown that Eyjafjallajökull can be a precursor to additional Katla activity. Some geophysicists in Iceland support the notion that the recent volcanic eruption at Eyjafjallajökull may trigger a second eruption at Katla, which would cause a major flooding event due to melting of glacial ice.

Even 9/11 didn't even have such a big impact on aviation as vulcano currently has. I'm very curious how this will affect my work this weekend and how long this will continue! Well time to blame Iceland haha
No but serious, Quicksilver, why does plane fly thru clouds but not thru this one? I mean the pilot got the radar?
And why is the picture white in front of the plane?
Can it cause anything ?

read my posts =/
Cloud = mixture of water in fluid and gas form
Ash = highly corrosive solid objects
Clouds you fly THROUGH
Ash you fly INTO

Re: Vulcanic ash crippling European Air Traffic.
Florent, what Mark said is indeed right. And the whitish thing in the first image I linked of that 747 is the result of the friction between the airplane and the ashes. Vulcanic ash has very sharp edges which can really strip the paint of an aircraft (which happened with flight BA009)! Look at Marksel's posts again and I'm sure you will understand
Ultimately, these ashes can cause an aircraft to crash as they make the engines flame-out (they stop working), the aircraft descends and there is no telling if the pilots can re-ignite they engines in time.
Here's a link with some very cool photos that people made of the vulcano:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/yahooeditorspicks/galleries/72157623855495574/#photo_4500152340
Also, I've got the latest Metcharts!
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/aviation/vaac/data/VAG_1271417376.png
And one from the Norwegian MET office:
http://met.no/?module=Articles;action=Article.publicShow;ID=2873
Judging from those 2 links, it wouldn't surprise me if the closure of the airspaces remains valid until atleast sunday
@ Kwaakt, nice shot and it gives a good view of what things are looking like. Must be nice sitting in the garden now eh

Re: Vulcanic ash crippling European Air Traffic.
The morning update:
It's still not good
All airspaces still closed until at least 18:00Z today and the UK even until tomorrow morning already. Overnight there was a window where the ashes were gone and flights could get through to the UK, but the airspace is now closed again.
By the looks of the image, it's going to take a while before ANY flight from mainland Europe will be airborne again. And there is even talk of some airlines getting into serious financial trouble because of this. I really doubt there will be any flying this weekend.
