Whale pwns boat

A couple`s sailing trip was unexpectedly interrupted on Tuesday afternoon when a whale breached nearby and landed on their yacht in Table Bay, South Africa.

Paloma Werner and her boyfriend and business partner, Ralph Mothes of the Cape Town Sailing Academy were out in the bay when they spotted a young southern right whale which breached about 100 metres away. Werner says that before they knew it the whale was only 10 metres from them.
She thought it would swim under the yacht but instead, it breached again and landed with its massive bulk on the coach roof, bringing down the steel mast and rigging.

Luckily neither crew member was injured and it appears that the whale escaped with flesh wounds and severe bruising.
The 10 metre long training vessel called `Intrepid` was not under power at the time and due to the light winds, the couple were unable to take evasive action when they spotted the creature close by.

Meredith Thornton, a scientist and manager of the Cape Town Mammal Research Institute believes that the whale was unaware of the yacht`s presence since they use mainly sound to detect nearby objects, not eyesight.
Thornton says that the southern right whales come to the cape`s coastal waters to breed and can be seen more prolifically during the southern hemisphere`s winter months.

She also believes that incidents like this might become more frequent in this vicinity, since more and more people are taking to the waters to swim and sail and the whales are continuing to breed at a healthy rate.

Werner says that it is lucky that the yacht is made of steel, had it been fiberglass it would most probably have sunk.
A tourist from Botswana who was onboard a nearby sightseeing boat took an amazing photograph of the whale breaching, a split-second before it landed on the `Intrepid`.

The couple were able to start the engine after the collision and satisfied that water was not leaking in below decks, made their own way safely back to harbour where they removed the crumpled sails and with assistance, removed the damaged mast.
Other sailors who had witnessed the collision enquired as to the well being of the crew. They were fine.
Werner was reported to have remained in good spirits, saying wryly that this gave a whole new meaning to having a whale of a time.
