You could survive it. As it says it missed major arteries. But he is defenetly not the same as before the knife. Memories and persenol behaviour are gone or total changed.

It's one of those strange phenomena -- kind of like how the guy survived from a car flipping over him and crush him. He survived, but at the expense of losing his ability to walk.

And as kwaakt stated, he won't be the same as before, there are definitely consequences/aftereffects.

Oh there was this guy back in the old days who had this steel bar go through is nose and up somewhere... I forgot. But it was somewhat similar that it penetrated deep into the brain and still lived. However, his entire personality was changed or something of the like. If I remember correctly. his name was Gauge or Gage. o.o
